One of the compelling reasons to change one’s lifestyle is the positive impact that can be made in others’ lives. Living simply allows us to commit more time and/or resources to causes or people we care about. Below are a few examples of the impact redirecting resources can have.
• Opt for less money and more freedom: Someone deciding to put fewer hours into working for money could make a significant contribution of time/energy to tutoring, environmental work, organizing, advocacy, art, etc., rather than devoting so many hours to work that may not be in line with your values, your aspirations, or what’s best for our world.
• Live simply for a period, save extra and explore options and possible impacts of how to invest those funds, including possibly taking time off to do full time work/learning in areas where there’s a need.
• Someone making $35000 a year, and choosing to live on 15K, could send $20,000 to (for example):
– Build one family home in rural Nicaragua AND support a complete preschool program for 50 kids (two teachers, two aids, materials, training, and a meal program) per year.
– Build four community wells per year in Kenya…improving the health and economic well-being of thousands of people each year.
– Give scholarships to 30 Mexican secondary students AND 10 university students per year.
We each have a significant amount of power in time and resources, and how we use it is our choice. And personal lifestyle sacrifice or change is much more doable when one has a clear vision or a connection to a specific cause or vision. The real impact we can each have is quite significant! And imagine the fun one can have, the learning possibilities, the relationships one can develop!!!!
